Hancock (2008) 07/09/2008

This movie was not quite what I expected. I thought it was going to be an action-comedy. Don't get me wrong, there is action, and there is comedy. It's Will Smith, folks, you almost can't have him in a movie without action and comedy. However, there wasn't nearly as much as I thought there would be, and there was more than just a touch of drama.

The way Hancock was marketed made it seem to me that it would be just the story of a heavily flawed superhero who doesn't want to live up to the "hero" part, and the story as he slowly becomes more of a boon to society than a bane. I thought this was a great, and fairly original, idea. Sure, every superhero has his flaws, but in the case of Hancock it's like a superflaw who has some hero.

Well, that's only part of it. It's also the story of said hero learning who he is. Literally. Not just an identity crisis and "coming of age" and all that wishy-washy shit. He actually has no idea who he is. Not wish-washy, but still a little cliche.

All in all it was a good movie, well written and well directed. Just make sure you don't go into it expecting what the ads and previews made it out to be. I suppose the marketing did it's job, I don't know that I would have gone to see it knowing what it really is, but I'm glad I did.

Will Smith gives a dramatic performance in this comedy-marketed film. Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron are a happily married family. Will Hancock, a one-of-a-kind superhero, bring them closer together or tear them apart?
The historical background was rough which eventually ruined the plot. With some cheap laughs, I was thoroughly disappointed with the movie.

Wanted (2008) 07/05/2008

Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy Pair up for this sexy action pic. The movie has sex appeal and violence from beginning to end. For Morgan Freeman fans, he appears as the wise one. I was somewhat disappointed with the development of the story. The plot has good twists and poor historical coverage. But, overall, it was a very entertaining film and action lovers will be satisfied.

Wanted is a geek's wild dream. James McAvoy is a lonely account manager when Angelina Jolie shows up and introduces him to a world of excitement and purpose.
The action is eye-popping, though unrealstic. The storyline is interesting, though confusing at points. The message is strongly argued, though cliched.
Wanted goes on the shelf next to Fight Club, Office Space and The Matrix.

Steve Carell's dialogue was very funny, and he delivered his lines perfectly every time. The plot was slow-paced but action-packed. The romance was cheesy and too quick to be realistic. Also, there was the surprising appearance of Bill Murray. Overall, it's another Steve Carell movie with Steve Carell playing Steve Carell!

Starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford. Brad Pitt, an Irish criminal, goes to America to deal weapons. He stays with a cop, Harrison Ford, and lives in the family's basement. While getting close to the family, he also brings danger to Ford's home. Pitt must decide to give in to his new friend or make a run for it. The acting is well done and the plot is interesting.

My favorite part of the movie was the music. James Newton Howard: you are a genius. The movie was action-packed and very good. The children have progressed in their acting abilities. Prince Caspian was a little cheesy, but I forgive him. Overall, it's a great film for all ages, and should be viewed in theaters.

I always thought that Bruce Willis was an okay actor. He always seemed the same in all of his movies. Until M. Night Shyamalan cast him in The Sixth Sense, that is. I considered him decent. Since Night used him for Unbreakable, I think he is brilliant. His role is powerful, and his character is strong. The movie alone is very slow, but it's what makes room for the characters to be so strong. This film is about a realistic superhero. Samuel L. Jackson gave a great performance as well. This movie is a must-see.

Yay! They finally made a good hulk movie. Liv Tyler and Edward Norton had great on-camera chemistry. The graphics were amazing and possibly the most impressive part. Sure, it has it's faults, but this is a movie about a man that turns large and green when he is angry. It was well done and you should see this in theaters. Iron man was better though.

I have fallen in love with Robert Downey Jr. He gave a fantastic performance. This movie had almost every genre of film thrown together with a finished product of genius. I would pay to see it more than once in theaters, and I'm cheap. There were minor flaws, but easy to dismiss because it has so much to make up for everything. Also, it was nice to see Gwyneth Paltrow again.
